'Shoot-at-sight' orders in Bihar
The Bihar Government has issued `shoot at sight' orders and deployed additional forces to check any outbreak of violence during the second phase of polling in 108 Assembly constituencies tomorrow. (In Orissa, where polling will be held for 70 Assembly seats, inter-State borders have been sealed and nearly 10,000 security personnel from CRPF deployed, according to PTI).

 2 BSF jawans killed in Srinagar
Two jawans of the Border Security Force (BSF) and a policeman were killed by militants in a shoot-out in Srinagar. This was followed by the setting ablaze of a building and many vehicles. A mosque was damaged when militants carried a rocket in Shaheed Gunj area.

'No message for Pak in exercise'
The on-going joint exercise of the Army and the Air Force in the Rajasthan desert does not contain any ``message'' for Pakistan, the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. V.P Malik, has said.

CVC refers 'some names' in hawala case to CBI
The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has referred a list of persons believed to be connected with the Jain hawala payoffs case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a further probe into allegations of accumulation of black money.

Pak. troops open fire in Poonch sector
At least three Indian soldiers and five Pakistanis were killed in the Poonch sector of Jammu on Tuesday night when Pakistani troops attacked an Indian post. One soldier is reported to be missing.

Attack 'repulsed' says Islamabad
Pakistan today claimed that it had repulsed an Indian ``attack'' on one of its ``forward posts'' in the Kotli sub-sector close to the LoC.

Norwegian envoy meets Chandrika
In clashes between Government forces and the LTTE in northern and eastern Sri Lanka at least 57 persons were reported killed even as Norway today took the first formal step to end the decade-long conflict.

'No politics in NSG security'
The Union Home Minister, Mr. L.K. Advani, today denied any ``politics'' behind the decision to remove the National Security Guard cover to some VVIPs including Congress(I) leaders, Mr. Arjun Singh and Mr. Rajesh Pilot. Transferring the task to the Delhi police would not burden it, he said.

Case against Engineer
The Indore police have registered a case against the Dawoodi Bohra reformist, Mr. Asghar Ali Engineer, for his alleged attack on the religious head of the Bohra community, Syedna Burhanuddin. The Syedna's secretary had lodged a complaint at the Aerodrome police station here.

India, Switzerland swap papers on investment
The increasing bilateral political and economic ties between India and Switzerland moved a significant step forward today with the two countries exchanging the instruments of ratification for an agreement on Promotion and Protection of Investment. With this, the agreement signed in April 1997 comes into force.

Pak. bans public display of arms
In yet another half-hearted measure to win the U.S. favour, Pakistan has announced a `ban' on the public display of arms (a common practice among all `Jehadi' groups) from March 1 apart from calling upon the Taliban to ensure that no Pakistani was trained in `Jehadi camps' in Afghanistan.
