BJP reaches deal on Orissa, Haryana
The BJP which has been engaged in a tug of war with its allies in the last few weeks over seat-sharing for the Assembly elections has finally something to cheer about.

Cong. releases Bihar second list
The Congress(I) today released its candidates list for the second phase of polling in Bihar. Among the 108 nominees are the State PCC chief, Mr. Sadanand Singh (from Kahalgaon), and several former Ministers of State such as Mr. Krishnanand Jha, Mr. Surendra Prasad Tarun, Mr. Vijay Shankar Dubey and Ms. Uma Pandey.

Budget session to begin on Feb. 23
The Budget session of Parliament would begin on February 23 and the Union Budget for the year 2000-01 would be presented at noon on February 29.

 A tribute to Kargil heroes
The massed band played ``Abide With Me...'' and the bells tolled in the background of the majestic expanse of Rashtrapati Bhavan as the National Tricolour was lowered respectfully this evening in the presence of the President - who is also the Supreme Commander of the nation's Defence Forces - bringing to a close the Republic Day celebrations.

Media twisted my remarks on Ram temple, says Gupta
The construction of a Ram temple at the Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya will not take place until the courts clear it or the dispute is resolved through dialogue, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr. Ram Prakash Gupta, said today.

A conspiracy: Scindia
Senior Congress(I) leader, Mr. Madhavrao Scindia, today said Mr. Ram Prakash Gupta's assertion on Friday that his Government would allow the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, confirms fears that the BJP, backed by the Sangh Parivar combine, is intent on pursuing its hidden agenda.

 Clinton calls for free world trade
The U.S. President, Mr. Bill Clinton, today issued a strong appeal for free and open world trade and markets and urged the delegates to take seriously those worried about the side-effects of globalisation.

Bihar Minister resigns
The Bihar Minister of State for Construction, Mr. Basant Singh, today resigned from the Rabri Devi ministry after he was denied an RJD ticket.

Minister rescued
The Manipur Arts and Culture Minister, Mr. M. Babu Singh was kidnapped, but later rescued by police, while his two security guards were missing even as a relative of Mr. Babu Singh was killed by underground activists during the election campaign at Wangu in Thoubal district today.

Two killed in Pak. blast
Two persons were killed and three injured in a powerful bomb blast in the Sialkot city of Punjab province today, a day after two explosions rocked Karachi killing four and injuring many.

BJP defends move to review Constitution
Insufficient decentralisation down to the grassroots is one of the reasons extended by the Bharatiya Janata Party for a review of the Constitution. The aim would be to increase stability at the Centre and the States, and to devolve more powers to the States, the municipal bodies and the panchayati raj institutions.
