MADRAS, Feb. 11 (1952)-Exactly at 3 p.m. yesterday on the hallowed and historic M.C.C. ground at Chepauk, India registered their first official Test victory when they defeated England by an innings and eight runs in the fifth and last match of the series and thus made honours even in the Rubber. Symbolically it was left to Gopinath, the youngest member of the team, to announce the great event to the world by taking a catch from Statham, one of England's last pair of batsmen. At once the great crowd rose to its feet and rent the air with long and tumultuous cheering. As if in tribute, the sun flooded the ground and made it golden. S. K. Gurunathan
