Yuki out of Davis Cup tie

March 27, 2014 11:32 pm | Updated May 19, 2016 12:01 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

“Am not going to Korea,” said Yuki Bhambri, and quickly added that he was in the process of conveying the message to captain Anand Amritraj in the US. The 21-year-old Yuki had hurt his left heel while training at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in the Capital. The pain had increased gradually over two days despite physiotherapy sessions. It was eventually diagnosed by the doctors as tendonitis.

“'They say that I may have stepped on it wrong. I am told that it is not serious at the moment but I have been advised to take care of it with physiotherapy at least for the next 10 to 12 days,” said Yuki.

He had been anxiously waiting for a positive development on the injury and thus had delayed breaking the bad news to the team captain.

Obviously disappointed at not being able to compete in the Davis Cup Asia Oceania Group I tie against Korea in Busan, starting on April 4, for which he had been preparing over the last few weeks, Yuki said that he was confident that India would win the tie comfortably.

“I have played in Korea and the courts are slow. It is still cold out there. So, it is not going to be difficult for Somdev to win two points. Our doubles is also strong. Whoever gets in to play the second singles among Saketh Myneni, Sanam Singh and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan should be able to tackle the Koreans well,” said Yuki.
