Vasisht upsets Nikshep to enter final

The pairs of Vasisht Vinod Cheruku & S.D. Prajwal Dev and Ramya Natarajan & Vanshika Sawhney clinched the boys’ and girls’ doubles titles at the adidas-MCC National junior under-18 tennis championship here on Friday.

Both the final matches were tame affairs, with neither of the defeated pairs putting up any fight.

Vasisht and Prajwal defeated Nenwani Anurag and Venkata Gnana Bhaskar 6-2, 6-2, while Ramya and Vanshika emerged winners over Nandini Sharma and R. Sai Avanthika by the same scoreline.

Earlier, Vasisht excelled in singles too, entering the final after outclassing top seed B.R. Nikshep for the loss of just three games.

He will meet Nitin Kumar Sinha, who scored a double bagel over S. Manish, in Saturday’s final.

In the girls’ final, R. Abinikka will play fourth seed Zeel Desai.

Girls: R. Abinikka (TN) bt Sathwika Sama (AP) 6-2, 7-5; Zeel Desai (Guj) bt Ramya Natarajan (TN) 6-3, 6-1.

Doubles (finals): Boys: Vasisht & S.D. Prajwal Dev (Kar) bt Nenwani Anurag (Del) & Venkata Gnana Bhaskar (AP) 6-2, 6-2;

Girls: Vanshika Sawhney (Del) & Ramya bt Nandini Sharma (Ch) & R. Sai Avanthika (TN) 6-2, 6-2.
