Vanshika Sawhney fought her way past Karman Kaur Thandi 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the girls’ semifinals of the ITF grade-4 junior tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Friday.

While the wiry Karman had a big game matching her tall frame, Vanshika had the legs till the very end in a gripping contest that lasted more than two hours.

The ability to get everything back at different pace, angles and length was Vanshika’s strength, and she stuck to her game with increasing perseverance as the match wore on.

Karman had her share of chances in the decider in which she kept breaking back every time she dropped serve, but was below par with her serve in the tenth game and sprayed her shots around.

In the final, Vanshika, who had beaten the top-seeded Simran Sethi earlier, will face the free-stroking left-hander Vasanti Shinde, who got past the second-seeded Dhruthi Venugopal.

In the boys’ event, Paramveer Singh Bajwa’s fine run came to an end as he was beaten by the fifth-seeded Vidit Vaghela.

The other spot in the final went to the top-seeded Kennosuke Nouchi of Japan who breezed past Varis Yagudin of China for the loss of four games.

In the boys’ doubles final, local lads Aditya Deswal and Deepak Vishvakarma squandered a good start to lose to the top-seeded Kennosuke Nouchi and Alexey Prokopchuk in the super tie-break.

Simran and Dhruthi had the consolation of bagging the doubles title, as they beat Karman and Vasanti.

The results :

Boys: Semifinals : Kennosuke Nouchi (Jpn) bt Varis Yagudin (Rus) 6-3, 6-1; Vidit Vaghela bt Paramveer Singh Bajwa 6-2, 6-3.
