Vaniya Dangwal in last eight

July 23, 2014 11:32 pm | Updated 11:32 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Wild-card Vaniya Dangwal beat Abbie Myers of Australia 7-6(3), 7-5 in the pre-quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Wednesday.

A day after upsetting top seed Natasha Palha in the first round, Myers came undone against the 21-year-old Vaniya’s short and low-paced strokes.

Despite her limitations, Vaniya turned it around from 0-2 and 3-5 down in the first set, to force a tie-break. Myers began with a double-fault, and Vaniya took 4-1 lead, and went on to wrap up the set.

The second set saw Vaniya recover again, from 1-4 down to take a 5-4 lead; Myers actually found herself having to save two match-points in the tenth game. Vania, however, broke Myers again — aided, no doubt, by two double-faults — in the twelfth game to close it out on her fifth match-point.

In the quarterfinals, Vaniya plays sixth-seeded Katherine Ip, who beat Amrita Mukherjee 6-0, 6-1.

Simran Kaur Sethi was the other local girl to make the quarterfinals as she beat Han Sung-Hee of Korea 7-6(3), 6-4. Simran will play Kim Dabin of Korea who upset second-seeded Rishika Sunkara 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

After winning the second set where she saved a match-point, Rishika was too defensive in the decider, and when she tried to attack, she ended up spraying it.

Veteran Rushmi Chakravarthi, whose craft saw her race away with the first set, failed to drive home the advantage over the 18-year-old Japanese Kanami Tsuji.

From facing three breakpoints at 2-2 in the second set, the Japanese reeled off six games on the trot to take a firm grip over the proceedings, and rode the momentum to close out the match.

The results: Pre-quarterfinals: Vaniya Dangwal bt Abbie Myers (Aus) 7-6(3), 7-5; Katherine Ip (Hkg) bt Amrita Mukherjee 6-0, 6-1; Kanami Tsuji (Jpn) bt Rushmi Chakravarthi 3-6, 6-2, 6-3; Sai Samhitha bt Arthi Muniyan 6-0, 6-2; Karman Kaur bt Jennifer Luikham 6-0, 6-0; Shweta Rana bt Snehadevi Reddy 6-2, 7-5; Simran Kaur Sethi bt Han Sung-Hee (Kor) 7-6(3), 6-4; Kim Dabin (Kor) bt Rishika Sunkara 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
