Tipsarevic likely for Chennai Open

September 24, 2014 01:24 am | Updated 01:24 am IST - CHENNAI:

After having missed the previous year’s competition due to a ruptured heel tendon, Janko Tipsarevic, the 2013 Aircel Chennai Open singles champion, is likely to return for the 2015 edition.

For Tipsarevic, the ATP 250 event in Chennai has “always been the favourite tournament to start the new season with” and it has been learnt that he is not averse to making his seventh visit to the city.

The 30-year-old has been out of action for the last 11 months and is currently recovering after a surgery to a benign tumour in his left foot.

The injury can be traced back to early 2013 when he first injured his heel at the Australian Open which ultimately led to his withdrawal from the 2014 Aircel Chennai Open.

From the heights of the top-eight in late 2012, the Serb is now world no. 572. But, the rankings would do little to diminish his star appeal in a city whose fans he has always been popular with. — Principal Correspondent
