    Diego Maradona, one of the world’s greatest footballers, is banned for 15 months for taking ephedrine, a stimulant, during the World Cup Finals in the US. It was his second ban for drug-taking.

    Czech Republic’s tennis star Petr Korda, the Australian Open champion who was once ranked World No. 2, tests positive for anabolic steroid nandrolone, gets a one-year ban.

  • 2005

    Rajasthan government takes over RCA, Modi becomes chairman of RCA. Meanwhile, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan and Co. take charge at BCCI. Modi inducted into BCCI working committee. Soon elevated to vice-president.

    Australian cricket great Shane Warne returns home from the World Cup after testing positive for drugs hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride, both diuretics normally used to aid temporary weight loss but they could also be used as masking agents for performance-enhancing drugs.

  • 2006

    Justin Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic 100m gold medallist and the 2005 World champion, tests positive for performance-enhancing drugs and receives a four-year ban from athletics. He begins competing again in 2010.

  • 2007

    On December 12, the International Olympic Committee strips Marion Jones of the five medals (three gold, two bronze) she won in the 2000 Sydney Olympics after the American admits using BALCO’s steroid THG from 2001 to 2002.

  • 2013

    Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France winner admits to using performance-enhancing drugs throughout his cycling career in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

  • 2015

    Malaysian World No. 1 badminton star Lee Chong Wei, a two-time Olympic silver medallist, is handed a backdated eight-month ban for doping in April. He had tested positive for an anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone during the World Championship a few months before that.
