The Sports ministry today approved a financial assistance of Rs. 35 lakh to tennis player Somdev Devvarman for his training, travel and accommodation requirements this season.

“The ‘in-principle’ approval of the Competent Authority for financial assistance of Rs. 35 lakh from National Sports Development Fund ( NSDF) has been granted for training during the year 2016,” a ministry release said.

Somdev, who recently hired a new coach, has been struggling on the ATP tour and his ranking has plummeted to 186.
