India’s No.1 Somdev Devvarman advanced while up and coming Yuki Bhambri fumbled in the first round of the qualifiers of the $3,645,000 Sony Ericsson Open here.
Somdev, ranked 120, beat Frenchman David Guez 7-6(3), 6-4.
The Indian next plays third seed and 85{+t}{+h}-ranked Ukrainian Illya Marchenko who beat Brazilian Joao Souza 6-1, 6-3.
Wildcard Yuki, 17, went down to top-seeded Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 1-6, 3-6.
