Serena ends year on a high

October 29, 2012 01:57 am | Updated 01:57 am IST - ISTANBUL:

Serena Williams cruised to a third WTA Championships title on Sunday when she defeated Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3 in the final. The victory came at the end of a spectacular year for the American veteran who also claimed the Wimbledon, Olympic and US Open titles.

The win also took her career head-to-head record over Sharapova to 10-2.

Del Potro stuns Federer

At Basel, Juan Martin del Potro earned his revenge after six losses this season to hometown hero Roger Federer when he won the Swiss Indoors title 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(3) on Sunday.

The shock win denied world No. 1 Federer a sixth title from the last seven editions at the St. Jakobshalle.

Del Potro last beat the Swiss star in 2009 when he captured the US Open at Federer’s expense before registering a victory in the year-end final two months later.

After the defeat, Federer decided to withdraw from next week’s Paris Masters. Federer, 31, said he felt he needed to let a few niggles heal to be fully fit for the start of the World Tour Finals in London a week from Monday.

Del Potro won the 13th trophy of his career, and improved to 62-14 on the season.

The results:

At Istanbul: WTA Championships: Final: Serena Williams bt Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3.

At Basel: ATP Swiss Indoors: Final: Juan Martin del Potro bt Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(3).

At Valencia: ATP Valencia Open: Final: David Ferrer bt Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 3-6, 6-4; Semifinal: Dolgopolov bt Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 6-2.
