S.P. Misra has called Sania Mirza’s comments on the tennis team selection for the London Olympics impulsive and unfair.
The former Davis Cupper and AITA selection panel member pointed out that Sania hadn’t figured in the selection debate when the meeting was held on June 16.
“So, where is the question of talking to someone who was not sure of playing in the Olympics itself when the panel sat down to finalise Indian team?” he said, in a chat with The Hindu .
“AITA president Anil Khanna took great efforts to get both Sania and Somdev Devvarman wild-card entries for next month’s London Olympics,” he said.
“It is unfortunate that Sania decided to criticise (the selection) after getting the wild card. I sincerely prefer playing the game instead of jumping the gun and giving statements to the media,” the former national champion said. “Why spoil things before the Olympics?” he asked.
“The AITA chief has made it absolutely clear that Sania will be pairing Leander Paes in the mixed doubles event in the London Olympics. And I feel that she should be grateful to Paes for playing with her,” Misra said.
“Honestly, I feel that this sort of reaction from Sania was not all required.”
