Sanam Singh qualifies

Davis Cupper Sanam Singh will lock horns with the 154th-ranked fourth seed Ze Zhang of China in the men’s first round of the Asia Pacific Australian Open wild card tennis play-off in Nanjing, China.

Sanam, ranked 332, fought his way past 1,320th-ranked Yuqing Ning of China 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the final qualifying round on Wednesday.

India No.1 and 175th-ranked Yuki Bhambri will meet Farrukh Dustov in the first round.

Vishnu Vardhan will face Hsin-Han Lee of Chinese Taipei while Sriram Balaji will play Di Wu of China.

In the first round of hte doubles, Sriram and Sanam defeated the pair of Zhaoyi Cao of China and Andy Lau of Hong Kong 6-3, 6-1.

Third seeds Purav Raja and Vishnu Vardhan warmed up with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Yuqing Ning and Zhuoyang Qiu of China.

Top seeds Yuki Bhambri and Divij Sharan had a bye in the first round.

In women’s doubles, Rushmi Chakravarthi and Ankita Raina went down 7-6(3), 6-2 to Ting Li and Qiang Wang of China in the first round.
