Andy Murray will find his likeness on a British stamp for the second time in his tennis career from next month when Britain’s Royal Mail begins issuing commemorative postage stamps to celebrate the Scot’s historic Wimbledon victory.
The special stamps go on sale on August 8, a month after Murray beat Novac Djokovic for the first British men’s singles title at the All England Club since Fred Perry in 1936.
“The Murray montage won’t be just one mere stamp, but a collectors’ set of four — two with the trophy and the other two action shots,” said a Royal Mail official.
“His historic win at Wimbledon has made the nation proud, and we can now celebrate his success with this new stamp issue.”
Sporting stamps are nothing new to Britain, with previous postage stamps issued in honour of London 2012 gold medallists plus English Ashes, football, and rugby World Cup wins.
Murray is also an old hand at stamps after one was issued last summer after he won the Olympic gold medal on the grass of the All England Club. He also had a pair of traditional Royal Mail postboxes painted gold in his honour, the first on Wimbledon’s Church Road and the other in his Scottish hometown of Dunblane.
