Nedunchezhiyan cruises in opener

Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan opened his campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 win over former National champion Vijay Kannan in the men’s first round of the Fenesta National tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.

The talented left-hander from Chennai was teased to some extent by the crafty and rhythmic strokes of Vijay, who looked to sport the same physical presence he had 11 years ago when he beat Rohan Bopanna in the final here. In fact, Vijay had won a double crown in the National championship then.

This time though, Vijay lacked the physical energy to back up his tennis acumen and had to settle for some rousing winners, before making a meek surrender.

Jeevan served well as the match progressed and stroked nicely, getting into rhythm for the matches ahead.

In fact, it was like a training drill for him most of the time, as he willingly ran from corner to corner.

In other matches in the men’s section, Tejas Chaukalkar knocked out seventh-seeded Abhijeet Tiwari, while Mohit Mayur fought his way past eighth seed Chandril Sood in a tricky second set.

In the women’s section, former champion Sonal Phadke not only made the draw as a lucky loser, but also got past wild card Anushka Bhargawa who retired midway through the third set.

Sonal may fancy her chances in the next round against fifth seed Eetee Maheta.
