Unseeded Ashwin Vijayragavan of Andhra Pradesh stunned eighth-seeded Lakshit Sood of Uttar Pradesh in the first round of the National grasscourt tennis here on Monday.
Third-seeded Vishnu Vardhan of Tamil Nadu began his campaign to regain the title downing Statemate Mohammad Fariz in straight sets.
Vishnu, who won the title last in 2007, weathered initial resistance from Fariz as the first set went to the tie-breaker.
Drawing on his experience, which includes representing the country in Davis Cup and the London Olympics, Vishnu Vardhan prevailed 7-4 in the tie-break.
He pushed the advantage further to break Fariz in the fifth game of the second set.
Ashwin won the crucial tie-break against Lakshit after the games went with serve in the first set.
In the second set Lakshit took a 2-1 lead breaking Ashwin in the third.
But the Andhra player came back strongly and dominated the next five games to win the second set 6-3, and the match.
All the seeds in the women’s draw advanced into the next round.
