2005 was Nadal’s breakthrough year and he dominated the spring clay court season. He won his first Monte Carlo trophy after defeating Argentina's Guillermo Coria 6-3, 6-1, 0-6, 7-5.
Nadal’s clay-court dominance over Roger Federer was just on the rise when he defeated the Swiss Maestro at the Monte Carlo Open in 2006. Nadal won 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.
The duo met again in the finals next year.. the match throwing up the same result with Nadal winning 6-4, 6-4 over Federer.
Federer was never third time lucky at the Monte Carlo as he fell to Nadal at the Monte Carlo Masters Series in 2008, 7-5, 7-5.
Nadal defeated first-time finalist Novak Djokovic at the Monte Carlo tournament 6–3, 2–6, 6–1 in 2009. Little did he know that his opponent would break his winning streak a few years later.
Nadal met fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco at the 2010 Monte Carlo tournament, defeating him with a bagel to boot - 6–0, 6–1.

Djokovic met Nadal at the finals yet another year in 2012, but couldn’t convert it into a victory. He was defeated 6–3, 6–1 by Nadal who won the Monte Carlo title for the eighth consecutive time. The duo met in the finals next year, where Djokovic finally scored his revenge and broke Nadal’s winning streak 6–2, 7–6 (7-1)
Nadal never made it to the finals in both 2014 and 2015, losing to Ferrer in the quarterfinals and Djokovic in the semifinals respectively. He was back to his winning ways in 2016, however, defeating Gael Monfils 7-5, 5-7, 6-0 to win a record ninth title.
In what was seen as a reprise of his yesteryear clay dominance, Nadal won a record 10th Monte Carlo title defeating Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-1, 6-3.
