The Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) in association with Liberty Videocon General Insurance has decided to introduce an innovative inter-club competition across the State. “We want to give competitive tennis for club members who are over 25 in age. Club tennis in Mumbai and Pune is booming and very strong. Club members play tennis for an hour or two for fun sake, but they are extremely competitive. Nandan Bal is a regular in club tennis in Pune. We hope to get around 200 clubs involved in the first year,’’ said Sharad Kannamwar, president, MSLTA here on Friday.

The competition will involve the districts of Mumbai, Pune, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Nagpur, Solapur, Kolhapur and Aurangabad. ``Internationally football, basketball, hockey and cricket have become popular through inter-club tournaments. Through this initiative we want to further promote tennis in the entire state of Maharashtra and provide a platform to the tennis playing community,’’ said Mr. Kannamwar.

Each tie will be played over four doubles matches and the results would be obtained by the games won by a club against another. The winner of the competition will receive Rs. 2 lakh and the runner-up, Rs. 1 lakh.
