Madrid win pushes Federer past Nadal to second in rankings

Roger Federer moved into second place past Rafael Nadal in the latest ATP tennis rankings issued on Monday, the day after a record—equalling 20th Masters title for the Swiss player.

Federer has 9,340 points to the 9,105 of Nadal, who like leader Novak Djokovic (11,200) was eliminated early in the Madrid Masters and complained about the slippery blue clay surface there.

The former number one Federer beat seventh—ranked Tomas Bredych for the title in the Spanish capital on Sunday, equalling Nadal’s Masters record and getting a 74th career title.

Serena moves to sixth

Serena Williams continued her return to the top tiers of the WTA tennis rankings by rising three places to sixth in the wake of her Madrid title on Sunday.

The former number one Williams has 5,300 points in Monday’s list after crushing number one Victoria Azarenka in straight sets at the big clay court event in Spain.

Azarenka tops the bill with 9,020 points despite her third defeat of the year. Maria Sharapova, also beaten by Williams in Madrid, has 7,610, and Agnieszka Radwanska is third on 7,080.
