Andy Roddick joined the list of players who will miss the French Open starting on Sunday, with the number 11 withdrawing from the clay-court major with a shoulder injury.
The 28-year-old picked up the problem last week in Rome and had to pull from the doubles final. Roddick also missed the Nice event this week and is now hoping to be ready for the grass season at Queen’s club, London, which begins on June 6.
Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez is also out of Paris with a knee injury after undergoing hip surgery last autumn. Also absent: both Williams sisters, former number one Dinara Safina and Argentine David Nalbandian.
Joining Roddick in withdrawing was the 2003 Paris champion Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, who has had trouble recovering after knee surgery last autumn.
Number 72 Ferrero has managed only five matches this season and has said recently he is close to retirement. Also missing will be 78th-ranked Lithuanian hope Richard Berankis with a hip injury.
