Juan Del Potro on Thursday pulled the plug on his scheduled Asian ATP tournament swing, saying he needs more time to heal after his wrist surgery last spring.
The decision leaves the number 14 out of events in Kuala Lumpur, starting a week from Monday, as well as in Tokyo and Shanghai.
Four months after undergoing surgery on his left wrist, and four years after another operation on his dominant right, the Argentine who has not played since February needs more time for recovery.
“Although my wrist is progressing very well, I need a little more time to reach the competitive level necessary to compete week after week,” the former US Open winner said in a statement. “I worked hard to be ready to make my comeback in Asia, where I had great results last year, but unfortunately it was not possible.” “I will keep working hard on my recovery to play the European season at the end of the year,” he added.
Del Porto, who turns 26 later this month, will not likely return to an ATP court until mid-October in Vienna.
The Kuala Lumpur event will not be short of draw cards, with US Open finalist Kei Nishikori, as well as Ernests Gulbis, Milos Raonic and Australian-Malaysian Nick Krygios all in the field.
