Six Indian players will be competing in Wimbledon this year, all in the Doubles category. Four of them will be in action on Wednesday, day three.
Rohan Bopanna
Gentlemen’s Doubles Round of 64
Partner : Édouard Roger-Vasselin (FRA)
First match : July 6, 2017; 4 pm IST
Versus : Dustin Brown (GER) and Alexander Zverev Jr (GER).
Bopanna claims that 2017 has been the best year of his career and it’s easy to see why. He clinched the mixed doubles title at Roland Garros, becoming the fourth Indian to win a Grand Slam. He looks in good form in the build-up to Wimbledon, reaching the men’s doubles final at Eastbourne.
Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan
Gentlemen’s Doubles Round of 64
Partner : Jared Donaldson (USA)
First match : July 5, 2017; 8:05 pm IST
Versus : Marcus Willis (UK) and Jay Clarke (UK).
After winning the Chennai Open doubles event with Rohan Bopanna earlier in the year, the south-paw’s warm up at Eastbourne concluded with a quarter-final exit. Paired with exciting American talent Jared Donaldson, the Chennai boy remains hopeful of a good showing at his maiden Wimbledon.
Leander Paes
Gentlemen’s Doubles Round of 64
Partner : Adil Shamasdin (CAN)
First match : July 6, 2017; 4 pm IST
Versus : Philipp Oswald (AUT) and Julian Knowle (AUT).
The veteran is no stranger to the competition, having won the men’s doubles once and the mixed doubles four times. Paes and partner Shamasdin won the Ilkey Trophy and reached the semi-finals of the Antalya Open in the build- up to Wimbledon.
Purav Raja and Divij Sharan
Gentlemen’s Doubles Round of 64
First match : July 5, 2017; 5:30 pm IST
Versus : João Sousa (POR) and Kyle Edmund (UK)
The all-Indian pair have been playing together for a while and have won 3 ATP titles, most recently at the Bordeaux Challenger earlier in the year. They also reached the quarterfinal of the Antalya Open and will be hoping to carry their good form into Wimbledon.
Sania Mirza
Ladies’ Doubles Round of 64
Partner : Kirsten Flipkens (BEL)
First match : July 5, 2017; 7:50 pm IST
Versus : Zhang Shuai (CHN) and Naomi Osaka (JPN)
From winning the girl’s doubles titles to winning the senior Wimbledon title in 2017 with Martina Hingis, she enters Wimbledon this year with uncertainty. Her partner Flipkens had to pull out at Eastbourne and still faces injury concerns going into Wimbledon. She reached the quarter-finals at the French Open and semi-finals in the Birmingham Classic.
