Australian Lleyton Hewitt has beaten Victor Hanescu of Romania 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) to level their Hopman Cup clash at 1-1.
Hewitt set up match point with an ace, then used a lob to the baseline to clinch the match.
Earlier, Sorana Cirstea had beaten Samantha Stosur 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to give Romania a 1-0 lead.
Cirstea and Hanescu were to take on Stosur and Hewitt in mixed doubles later Saturday to decide the opening fixture of the eight-country, eight-day mixed-teams tournament at the Burswood Dome.
It was the only match Saturday. The United States, represented by U.S. Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin and John Isner, plays Sunday against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Tommy Robredo of Spain.
