Garvit Batra knocked out second-seeded Sahil Deshmukh 6-2, 6-4 in the boys’ first round of the Concor ITF junior Grade IV tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.
Garvit started strongly and retained the momentum against the wiry opponent who had the serve, strokes and deceptive angles, but not the belief in his ability.
He will face Dmitry Popko of Kazakhstan in the pre-quarterfinals to be played on Wednesday, as the organisers have dedicated Tuesday for doubles action.
In the girls’ section, top Indians Simran Kaur Sethi, Sri Vaishnavi Peddi Reddy and Snehadevi Reddy dropped a token game each in making the pre-quarterfinals.
