Gao storms into the last four

May 20, 2011 12:08 am | Updated August 21, 2016 07:26 pm IST - CHENNAI:

China's Gao Xin, who often shies away from answering questions because he can't properly understand English, has been able to respond to opponents' probing queries, on the court, with ease. The top seed has, arguably, been the best player on view so far in the Asian closed junior tennis championships.

In his 6-2, 6-0 rout of Saurabh Singh, the fifth seed, in the boys' quarterfinals here on Thursday, Gao displayed enough evidence of his effective serves and powerful groundstrokes. Gao will take on Sahil Deshmukh of India in the semifinals. Sahil defeated Shaikh Abdullah 6-3, 6-1.

In the other last eight clashes, Yuki Muramatsu of Japan recorded a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Vilasier Khate. Yuki faces second-seeded Arjun Kadhe, who drubbed Vishwesh Sinha 6-0, 6-2.

Intense

The best thing about Gao is that he is able to maintain the intensity and focus even during long ralliesWhen rallies get long, the juniors generally tend to slow down the pace as they get tired. But Gao has been relentlessly hard and furious from the backcourt.

After the pasting he got in the first set, Saurabh had his chance in the first game of the second. Down 30-40, the Chinese came up with a backhand down-the-line winner. And from there on, he galloped.

Patrimonio exits

In the last singles match of the day, Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai of Thailand upset fifth-seeded Anna Clarice Patrimonio of Philippines 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the girls' quarterfinals.

Apichaya takes on giant-killer Rutuja Bhosale. Rutuja beat ninth-seeded Ching-Wen Hsu of Taipei 6-3, 6-1. The Apichaya-Anna match was evenly matched for most part. But once Anna was broken in the fifth game of the third and deciding set, she became vulnerable and started committing errors from the baseline.
