Federer to play Suisse Open after nine years

July 03, 2013 07:43 pm | Updated 07:43 pm IST - London

Roger Federer will make a return to his tennis roots after nine years away from the Suisse Open at Gstaad as the world number three tries to whip his game back into shape after an early loss at Wimbledon.

The winner of the alpine event the last time he played in 2004, tweeted his intentions: “I’ve decided to play #opengstaad. Excited to play in Switzerland. This was the event that gave me 1st wild card in ’98!”

Federer came to Gstaad as a hero in 2003, the day after winning Wimbledon for the first time and starting his unparalleled run of Grand Slam glory.

At that edition, he was presented with the gift of a cow, now long deceased, which fans and others just cannot seem to forget.
