Roger Federer came within two points of losing the first set but ran out a 7-6(2), 6-3 winner over teenager Frances Tiafoe in the second round at the Miami Open on Saturday.
Next up for Federer is Juan Martin del Potro.
“I would love to play against [del Potro],” Federer said, speaking before knowing who his next opponent would be. “We’ve had some epic matches against each other. I’m sure the crowd would love to see it.”
Sixth seed Dominic Thiem was the only high seed to suffer a loss on Saturday, falling 6-1, 7-5 to Borna Coric.
Nick Kyrgios and Matt Reid pipped Pablo Cuevas and Rohan Bopanna 7-5, 3-6, [10-7] in the first round of doubles.
Radwanska upset
Fifth seed Agnieszka Radwanska was the highest women’s casualty, blown away for the second time this year by Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.
In doubles, third seed Sania Mirza and Barbora Strycova advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over Demi Schuurs and Renata Voracova.
They next play Timea Babos and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
