India’s top-ranked player, world No. 90 Somdev Devvarman, has entered the main draw of the Aircel Chennai Open, after Estonia’s Jurgen Zopp pulled out.

Zopp, currently ranked 334 in the world, had found a place in the main draw due to his entry-protected ranking of 88, but has not recovered sufficiently from a back injury.

Somdev had narrowly missed out on a place earlier as the cut-off for direct entries was fixed at 89, the highest in the tournament’s history.

The 28-year-old was, in any case, assured of a wild card in the event of no player withdrawing.

With Somdev earning an automatic slot, the three wild cards for the tournament are likely to be announced next week.

A host of Indian players — Yuki Bhambri, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Saketh Myneni among others — will be in contention.
