Roger Federer appeared to lose focus in his first match back after the birth of his second set of twins, losing to 47th-ranked Jeremy Chardy of France 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) in the second round of the ATP Rome Masters on Wednesday.
After cruising through the first set easily, Federer began to commit unforced errors at an alarming rate and Chardy quickly took advantage amid swirling wind at the Foro Italico.
Meanwhile, Max Mirnyi became the 11th doubles player to reach 650 match wins, after teaming up with Mikhail Youzhny for a 6-3, 5-7, 10-4 first-round victory over Italian wild cards Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace. Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi each recorded their 200th match wins after defeating Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau 3-6, 6-3, 11-9.
