Bajwa shocks Gnana Bhaskar in ITF grade-4 juniors

Paramveer Singh Bajwa outplayed second-seeded Venkata Gnana Bhaskar Paramatmuni 6-3, 6-0 in the boys’ pre-quarterfinals of the ITF grade-4 junior tennis tournament here on Wednesday.

The 15-year-old came up with a string of delectable drops to outsmart Gnana Bhaskar, who had the game but not the temperament to fight his way out after a sedate start.

In the quarterfinals, Bajwa will face qualifier Manav Pondkule.

Meanwhile, lucky-loser Shrey Gupta continued his good run, knocking out Alex Solanki 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 after failing to serve out the match in the 10th game of the second set. He will meet Varis Yagudin of Russia, who dismissed fourth-seeded B.R. Nikshep 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In the girls’ section, qualifier Moulika Ram went down fighting 6-7(9), 6-1, 6-2 to Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva of Uzbekistan.

In doubles, top seeds Simran Kaur Sethi and Dhruthi Venugopal survived three match-points to beat Lalita Devarakonda and Jennifer Luikham 6-3, 4-6, 12-10.
