Qualifier Sanam Singh defeated sixth-seeded compatriot Yuki Bhambri 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-2 in the pre-quarterfinals of the $50,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Shanghai, China, on Thursday.

It was the second victory for 24-year-old Sanam against Yuki in professional circuit, following the three-set victory in the previous meeting in Chennai in 2009.

In the quarterfinals, Sanam will meet top seed Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei, who defeated Kiwi qualifier Jose Statham 7-5, 6-1.

The 20-year-old Yuki will have the doubles quarterfinals to compete in partnership with Divij Sharan.

Vishnu Vardhan, however, lost in the first round of doubles in partnership with Denys Molchanov of Ukraine 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-10 against wild cards Gao Xin and Li Zhe of China.
