Always wanted to be Davis Cup captain: Anand Amritraj

September 17, 2014 02:47 am | Updated 02:47 am IST - CHENNAI:

It has been Anand Amritraj’s dream to captain the Indian Davis Cup team all along. When he received a call from his son, Stephen in September last year, he was pleasantly surprised. “I was speechless with excitement. This is something I always wanted to (do). (Though) it took a long time,” said Anand, in a function organised by Rotary Club of Madras here on Wednesday.

“It was great. The first year (with the Indian team) has been phenomenal.”

Anand said the camaraderie among the players has been the best he’s seen in a long time. “The chemistry among the players and the team spirit has been really good in this past year, (one) I have not seen since the 1980s.”

On some players being reluctant to play for the country in the Asian Games, Anand said “it’s been a scheduling problem. The Commonwealth Games/Asian Games/Olympics doesn’t fit into the ATP calendar.”
