The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) will hold Evening racing (Sundown racing), at the Mahalaxmi race course on trial basis on Saturday (April 18) and Sunday (April 19). Cambay Tiger, India’s largest selling seafood brand, is the title sponsor for the evening racing week-end and it will be known as “Cambay Tiger Sundown Racing”.
The illumination of the track will be from 1,200m to the winning post and about 300 metres beyond so as to enable horses to pull up after the races. The races on these days will commence at 4-30 or 5 p.m. Only three races will be run under the floodlights and will be scheduled at 7-15 p.m, 7-45 p.m and 8-15 p.m.
Mr. Khushroo Dhunjibhoy, Chairman, RWITC, while briefing the Press on Saturday said “It is a fantastic initiative by the Club and this would undoubtedly be a “game changer” which will increase the footfall. I am confident that with the evening racing, the Mahalaxmi race course would turn into one of the exciting and enjoyable destinations for the Mumbaikars to spend evening with their family. There will be inter-venue betting for both the days, except Hyderabad Race Club.”
Dr. Ram H.Shroff, Chairman, Night Racing working group, RWITC, stated “I am thrilled to initiate and run this project with the support of my colleagues. I am certain this will change the way racing is conducted in this country. We are also proud to associate with Cambay Tiger who will be helping us redefine racing. The Bajaj Electricals has offered to assist the Club in arranging the infrastructure needed for the trial run. We will be conducting mock races under floodlights on April 16 and 17.
