Invitation Cup on March 1

The Indian Turf Invitational Cup week-end will be held on Saturday, February 28 and Sunday, March 1, at the Mahalaxmi race course here.

With four graded races packed into the Invitational Cup week-end the main attraction Invitation Cup will be sponsored by OMKAR Realtors and Developers Pvt Ltd. Sprinters Cup and Stayers Cup will be held on Saturday (Feb. 28) while Super Mile and the Invitation Cup will be held on Sunday (March 1).

Speaking about the 53rd edition of this prestigious event, Mr. K.N.Dhunjibhoy, Chairman, RWITC, said “At RWITC, we continue to advance the professional standards of each event in order to remain among the best in the country. After four years we are thrilled to host the Invitation Cup and through it bring to Mumbai yet another week-end of magnificent action where the finest in India’s racing fraternity will congregate. Instituted in 1963 by the Turf Authorities of India, Indian Turf Invitation Cup is a racing event unlike any other event held on rotation basis. The Invitation Cup used to rotate among the five clubs in India, i.e. Royal Calcutta Turf Club, Royal Western India Turf Club, Bangalore Turf Club, Hyderabad Race Club, Madras Race Club and now may be sixth, as Mysore Race Club has earned its independent club status.

The first winner of this prestigious race was the southern challenger Mount Everest ridden by J. McGaffin and trained by Mohd. Lahori at Mumbai in 1963.
