Defending champion Panimalar College of Engineering defeated Loyola College in the final league match 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 to lift the Bertram Memorial Shield for volleyball here on Sunday.

Panimalar started the match in great fashion by racing ahead to a 10-3 lead. However Loyola came back and ran Panimalar close before conceding the set 22-25.

The start of the second set saw Loyola concede easy points with their players often over hitting serves. But V. Karthick and Evin Edward kept the host in the set and it led by a narrow margin of 10-9. Loyola failed to capitalise and lost the second set 19-25.

Panimalar upped its game in the third and built up a lead of 20-13. It wrapped up the match by winning the third 25-16 with A. Shankar hitting the winning smash.
