China’s Zhou Lulu added to China’s ever-growing gold medal tally at the London Games on Sunday, winning the women’s over-75 kilogramme weightlifting competition with a world record.
Zhou set the world record with a combined 333kg, beating Russian Tatiana Kashirina by just 1kg.
Kashirina, who managed a world record in the snatch portion with 151kg, seemed on course to win the gold as she took the world record to 332kg — only to see Zhou grab gold when she managed an Olympic record of 187kg in the clean and jerk.
Hripsime Khurshudyan took bronze with 294kg, securing Armenia’s first medal at these Olympics. She was the first-ever female athlete from Armenia to win an Olympic medal.
The gold was China’s third from the last four women’s over-75kg competitions, with the Beijing Games four years ago being the only ones at which the country failed to win.
