Former champion Mohd. Zamri Baba (Malaysia) clocked a new lap record time of 01:44.025 in the SuperSports category (600cc) during the opening day’s practice in the third round of the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championship at MMRT here on Friday.
Baba thus erased the record set by Decha Kraisart of Japan (01:44.100s) set in 2011.
A winner here in 2010, Baba said, “The track still lacks grip, but there certainly has been improvements. The heavy rain over the past two nights made things a lot tougher because there was a lot of mud left on the track surface after the rain had dried up.”
Championship leader Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman (Malaysia) posted the second fastest time of 01:44.328, followed by Katsuaki Fujiwara of Japan (01:44.651).
India’s Rajini Krishnan (Moto Rev) finished 15th in the first practice race in a time of 1:48.532. He clocked 1:47.949 in the second to emerge 19th.
R. Deepak was unable to take part in the practice races as his “bike was not yet ready.”
He is likely to compete on Saturday.
In the Asia Dream Cup section, India’s Sumit Lucas Toppo finished eighth, while A. Prabhu emerged 10th in the first and only race of the day in the category.
There is no Indian representation in the Underbone 115cc category.
