Duo takes top spot in mixed team air pistol event

Yashaswini Singh Deswal and Anmol provided a memorable finish to the Indian campaign by clinching the mixed team gold in air pistol in the Junior World Shooting Championship here on Wednesday. Youth Olympics finalist Yashaswini had clinched the junior women’s gold earlier with a World record.

In the mixed team competition, which is being tested after the confirmation of its entry in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Yashaswini and Anmol beat Russia 7-4 for the gold.

The duo had earlier topped the semifinals with 239.3 points, two points ahead of Russia, while France beat Korea 7-1 for the third place.

India third

Earlier, in the 17-team competition, in which some of the countries fielded two teams, India was placed third with 478 points, one point behind the leaders, Latvia and Korea, while France was fourth with 477. Russia, Korea, Iran and Czech Republic were the other teams that qualified for the semifinals.

The Indian mixed air rifle team, however, missed the bronze as it was beaten 7-3 by China.

Earlier on Tuesday, Muskan had missed the junior women’s sports pistol medal, but had helped the team bag the bronze along with Gauri Sheoran and Chinki Yadav.

With three gold, two silver and three bronze medals, India placed second in the medals table behind China, which topped with nine gold, four silver and eight bronze from among the 21 countries that won medals.

The results: Mixed team air pistol: Final: India (Anmol, Yashaswini Singh Deswal) bt Russia (Alexander Petrov, Nadezhda Koloda) 7-4; Third place: France bt Korea 7-1.

Mixed team air rifle: Final: Czech Republic (Filip Nepejchal, Nikola Foistova) bt China (Zhu Yingjie, Liu Yukun) 7-5; Third place: China (Gao Mingwei, Zhang Changhong) bt India (Arjun Babuta, Shreya Bandyopadhyay) 7-3.

Junior women:25m sports pistol: 1. Cao Lija (Chn) 36 (577); 4. Muskan 24 (578); 16. Chinki Yadav 571; 34. Gauri Sheoran 562.
