Soryan Reihanpour on Sunday won Iran’s second Olympic medal in the men’s 55 kilogramme Greco-Roman wrestling since 1960, while Russian Roman Vlasov won the 74kg event.
Vlasov, who gave his country their second victory in the Greco-Roman 74kg category, beat Armenian Arsen Julfalakyan in the gold medal match.
The bronze medals went to Lithuanian Aleksandr Kazakevic and Emin Ahmadov from Azerbaijan.
In the lighter category, Reihanpour beat Azerbaijan’s Rovshan Bayramov 3-0 in the final. Russian Mingiyan Semenov and Peter Modos from Hungary shared bronze.
Bayramov, silver medallist at the last Olympics in Beijing, becomes the first wrestler since 1992 (Jan Ronningen from Norway) to win two medals in the men’s 55kg Greco-Roman.
Semenov said he had aimed for gold. “When I came to the Olympic Games, all the members of our team wanted to get the gold medal but the bronze medal is still very good.”
