US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin selected Tiger Woods along with Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and Rickie Fowler as his four wildcard picks to complete his 12-man team in Wales.
The four join the eight automatic qualifiers — reigning Masters champion Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar — who were announced following the 92nd PGA Championship last month.
The US take on Europe in Newport between October 1 and 3 hoping to win the Ryder Cup on foreign soil for the first time since 1993.
The US final selection ends weeks of speculation on whether Woods would be chosen. It will be the world number one’s sixth Ryder Cup, but the first in which he was not an automatic qualifier.
Team Europe, led by captain Colin Montgomerie, features Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Miguel Angel Jiminez, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Ross Fisher, Peter Hanson and brothers Francesco Molinari and Edoardo Molinari.
