Women’s relay teams cleared

September 17, 2014 02:54 am | Updated 02:54 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Tuesday cleared the women’s 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams to travel with the rest of the Indian athletes to Incheon for the Asian Games.

The athletics squad will leave for Korea on Sunday.

The AFI, which had selected 56 athletes for the Asiad last month, had asked some athletes to go through fitness trials.

In the trials held at NIS Patiala on Monday, the women 4x100m team clocked 45.27 and the 4x400m team did a 3:29.93.

The AFI gave a go-ahead to the women relay teams while deciding to hold a re-trial for the 4x400m men's squad, which returned a 'below par' 3:08.62, on September 18.

Shot putter Om Prakash Karhana suffered an ankle injury just before his trial.

“The AFI is awaiting his medical report and will review his case once the injury level is known,” said an AFI release.

“Triple jumpers, Mayookha Johny and Renjith Maheshwary, did not meet the level expected by the AFI... Both athletes have asked for one more chance and are likely to give the trial on September 18,” the release added.
