WFI to withdraw medals of six wrestlers

May 13, 2013 02:22 am | Updated 02:22 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has decided to withdraw medals and certificates of six winners at the ongoing junior National wrestling championship at Chandigarh for failing to provide samples for dope tests.

The winning wrestlers include Rahul Pal (84kg), Amit (74kg), Sandeep (60kg) and Sunil Kumar (120kg) — all in the Greco-Roman category — and Anoop and Manjeet (both 84kg) in freestyle.

“It was most unfortunate that the medal winner wrestlers also avoided to give samples and immediately rushed from the competition venue. It has been decided to withdraw the medals and certificates of the winning wrestlers,” the WFI said in a press statement. “The case of these wrestlers will be forwarded to the Disciplinary Committee of WFI and a final decision will be taken after an enquiry,” the statement added. Besides these six, several other wrestlers too failed to provide samples for dope tests conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). — Special Correspondent
