Viswanathan Anand is World No. 3

Following his brilliant victory at the Candidates Tournament in Russia, Viswanathan Anand has jumped five places to become the World No. 3 in the latest rating list released by FIDE, the world chess governing body.

Anand, with 2,785 Elo points, is ranked behind World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway (2,881) and Armenia’s Levon Aronian (2,812). P. Harikrishna is the highest ranked Indian after Anand at No. 25 with 2,726 points while K. Sasikiran is placed 66th with 2,680 Elo points.

K. Humpy (2,613) maintains her No. 3 ranking among women behind Hungarian Judit Polgar (2,685) and Hou Yifan of China (2,618). D. Harika (2,507) is ranked 16th while Tania Sachdev is placed 49th with 2,427. Two more Indians are in the top 100 — Eesha Karvade (2,414) in 58th spot and Mary Ann Gomes (2,386) in 82nd.

In the country ranking based on the average rating of the top 10 players, India (2,652) is seventh below Russia (2,744), Ukraine (2,696), China (2,675), France (2,663), Hungary (2,656) and Armenia (2653).
