Vishnu Saravanan triumphs

Vishnu Saravanan of Mumbai bagged the gold in the Optimist Class on the final day of the Deloitte Monsoon regatta at the Hussainsagar Lake here on Sunday. He chalked up 17 penalty points after discards, in the 11 races that were conducted.

Chitresh Thata of Chennai with 22 penalty points claimed the silver after three wins and some consistent performances. The 11-year-old showed maturity beyond his years and seems headed for bigger feats in the near future.

The bronze went to Mahesh Balachander of Chennai, the current national champion, who had 33 penalty points.

The Ind Opti fleet was dominated by the Sea Cadet Core sailors who claimed all top 10 positions . Shubam Jadav clinched the gold followed by Piyush Chavan (silver) and Aditi Raorane (bronze).

The race committee decided on Saturday evening to hold at least 11 races in the Optimist competition. And thanks to the splendid conditions which prevailed on Sunday morning, all races were conducted smoothly.

Four races were held back to back which made the regatta a test of endurance for the young participants who had to be on the water for five hours at a stretch.

The results (Optimist Class):

Eighth race: 1. Chitresh Thata, 2. Mahesh Balachander, 3. Vishnu Sarvanan. Ninth Race: 1. Vishnu, 2. Naveen Kumanan, 3. Chitresh. 10thrace: 1. Vishnu, 2. Chitresh, 3. Mahesh. 11th race : 1. Naveen Kumanan, 2. Chitresh, 3. Vishal Singh.

Overall placings: Optimist Class: 1. Vishnu Saravanan (17 penalty points), 2. Chitresh Thata (22 pp), 3. Mahesh Balachander (33pp), 4. Naveen Kumanan (54 pp), 5.Aniketh Rajaram (56 pp). Ind Opti Class: 1. Shubam Jadhav (27 pp), 2. Piyush Chavan (28 pp), 3. Aditi Raorane (32 pp).
