Vijender and Jangra enter semifinals

Beijing 2008 bronze medallist Vijender Singh assured himself of a medal with an impressive win on points over Aaron Prince (Trinidad and Tobago) in the quarterfinals of the men’s middleweight category (75kg) in the boxing event on Wednesday.

The Indian held the upper hand in all the three rounds as he pushed the Trinidadian to the ropes time and again unleashing a flurry of punches.

Looking forward to the semifinals, the Indian said, “Once you get to the semifinal stage of any competition you have to be at your best and prepare as if for a gold medal fight. I am up against (Connor) Coyle next and it’s going to be a great challenge. However, I am feeling great having done well throughout last week.”

Mandeep Jangra also made it to the last-four round of the men’s welterweight category (69kg) after he received a walkover from Australian Daniel Lewis who was ruled out of the bout on medical grounds.

In badminton, P. Kashyap needed just 24 minutes to post a 21-7, 21-8 win over Jeff Tho (Australia) and book a quarterfinals berth in the men’s singles event. R.V. Gurusaidutt also made it to the quarterfinals as he disposed off Andrew D’Souza (Canada) 21-13, 21-9.

Among the women, P.C. Thulasi made short work of Rachel Honderich (Canada) 21-12, 21-7 in 31 minutes to enter the last eight.

Dipika-Joshna in semifinals

PTI reports:

Indian squash players Dipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa beat Joelle King and Amanda Landers-Murphy of New Zealand 11-9 11-5 to enter women’s doubles semifinals.

Earlier, Saurav Ghosal and Harinder Pal Sandhu lost to Scotland’s Stuart Crawford and Greg Lobban 11-5, 8-11, 11-9 in the men’s doubles pre-quarterfinals.

Bowls team in last four

The Indian lawn bowls men’s fours team, comprising Kamal Kumar Sharma, Chandan Kumar Singh, Samit Malhotra and Dinesh Kumar reached the semifinals, after beating Norfolk Island 26-4, here on Thursday.

Samit said that they were nervous but pulled it off through team effort.
