VFI buoyed by IVL's success

June 27, 2011 11:16 pm | Updated 11:16 pm IST - Chennai:

Buoyed by the success of the inaugural edition of the Indian Volley League (IVL) and by the tremendous media exposure for the sport at all venues during the competition, the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) has decided to take stock of the championships at a special meeting to be held here on July 2. The pros and cons noticed during the four-leg event will be discussed, according to K. Murugan, Secretary-General, VFI.

The VFI is confident of enlarging the programme and bring in greater professionalism to IVL. While Mr. Murugan noted that there were several positive factors, he also agreed that a lot of improvement was needed in some areas like transportation, accommodation, technical aberrations, quality of supervision and the recovery time for the players in between one leg to the other.

Mr. Murugan was happy that the IVL became the stage for several youngsters to catch the eye of the selectors. He specifically mentioned Venkatesh and Kataria in the list. He commended the role of Kapil Dev, a veteran in the sport, in contributing to the success of Chennai Chargers, the winner of the trophy. He also appreciated the fitness level of the players who played a series of matches in 27 days.

The meeting on July 2, which will be attended by all the owners of the IVL along with the technical officials, who were part of the IVL, is expected to debate the future format and other details. Important among them is to frame the rules and regulations for inducting foreign players into each franchise. Mr. B. Sivanthi Adityan, President, VFI, is expected to preside over the meeting and interact with the owners.
