The Chennai leg of the STAR Sports Young Heroes initiative was formally launched at the Chennai Press Club on Friday. Ex-Iranian footballer and Indian club football legend Jamshid Nassiri, who’s the head mentor of the programme, unveiled the trophy for the two-day under-15 school-level tournament.

The process

The programme aims at conducting a series of such tournaments across 15 cities in the country and shortlist a pool of 45 players who will attend a training camp under an elite panel of coaches.

From that 16 players will be handpicked to go on an exposure trip to Spain and participate in another camp arranged by the Spanish Football Federation.

The tournament in Chennai featuring 48 schools, divided into 16 groups, is the second in the series after the inaugural competition in Kolkata.

The league matches will be of 15 minutes duration and the knockout matches of 20 minutes.

There will be a second and final phase in which the 15 winning schools will compete among themselves.
