TN girls, Delhi boys take the honours

Tamil Nadu and Delhi clinched the sub-junior girls' and mini boys' titles respectively in the National junior handball championships at the Nehru Indoor Stadium here on Friday.

Tamil Nadu girls defeated Punjab 18-10 in the summit clash while Delhi boys edged out Tamil Nadu 15-13.

Tamil Nadu didn't have it easy as Punjab girls kept fighting back. Trailing 5-9 in the first session, Punjab kept the scoreboard ticking through Prabhajit Kaur (7), who was the top-scorer.

Towards the end, TN converted half-a-dozen goals that effectively tilted the scales in its favour. Sai Keerthana (7), Sabitha (4) and Priyadarshini (4) were the top-scorers for the host.

Shanthini Kapoor, Principal Secretary to Government, Youth Welfare & Sports Development Department, gave away the prizes.

Special prizes:

Girls: Best player: Sabitha (TN); best goalkeeper: Lovepreet (Punjab).

Boys: Best player: Sukunthan (TN); best goalkeeper: Mohith (Delhi).

The results: Sub-junior girls: (final): TN bt Punjab 18-10; (third place): Delhi bt Haryana 12-11; Boys: (final): Delhi bt TN 15-13; (third place): Haryana bt Kerala 11-6.
