Seasoned archer Tarundeep Rai beat the heat to give a good performance and finish on the top of the men’s recurve rankings after the qualification round on the opening day of the third National ranking archery tournament at the Yamuna Sports Complex here on Friday.

Rai, who had taken a long break after the London Games, enjoyed his comeback performance by shooting a total of 1341 points. Mangal Singh Champia was a distant second with 1316, while young Atanu Das, on an identical 1316, was third.

Rai, who led the 90m contest by scoring 328 points, held his lead even after coming six points behind Champia, who shot a 343, in 70m. Rai showed his consistency to score 329 and 347 in 50m and 30m respectively.

“I was not practising for four-five months after the Olympics and then my son was born. Now I am back and feel good about my form. Hopefully, I will return better results in the elimination rounds,” said Rai. Several archers, including Rai, were of the opinion that the heat coupled with humidity, following the early monsoon rains, was a distraction.

In women’s recurve, Rimil Buriuly led the pack with a total of 1331 points.
